Guinea-Bissau: Embaló Settles in Morocco After a Stopover in Senegal and Congo

The president of Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, who was overthrown in a military coup, arrived in Morocco on Wednesday after transiting through Senegal and Congo.

According to local press reports, Embaló was first flown to Dakar on a special plane sent by Senegal, before traveling to Brazzaville, the capital of the Republic of Congo, and then arriving in Rabat, the Moroccan capital.

It is suggested that Embaló may stay in Rabat for a year during the transition period in Guinea-Bissau, or spend the same amount of time in Portugal.

In this Portuguese-speaking country of approximately 2.1 million inhabitants, a former Portuguese colony, a group of soldiers calling themselves the "High Military Command for the Restoration of Order" announced on November 26 that they had seized power on state television.

This announcement came a few days after General Horta N'Tam, who until then had been the army chief of staff, was sworn in as president of the transitional government and head of the High Military Command to lead the country for a one-year term.

As a reminder, a group of officers in Guinea-Bissau announced last month that they had taken control of the country, thus ousting President Embaló.

The day after the coup, General Horta N'Tam was sworn in as "president of the transitional government."

Ilídio Vieira Té, who had served as Finance Minister in the Embaló government, was appointed Prime Minister and Minister of Finance and formed a 22-member transitional government on November 30.

During the legislative and presidential elections of November 23, President Embaló, running for a second term, claimed to have obtained 65% of the vote, according to his team's count, even before the official results were announced.

His main rival, independent candidate Fernando Dias da Costa, also claimed victory.
