Rape Suspect Escapes from Police Custody in Rivers State
A male suspect, identified simply as Goodnews, who allegedly defiled a 16-year-old girl in the Rupokwu community, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, last week, has escaped from police custody.
The case was being investigated by the Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department in Port Harcourt.
It was gathered that the suspect escaped when the scene of the crime was visited as part of the investigation procedures.
The suspect was earlier arrested by operatives of the Special Area Rumudomaya and transferred to the State CID, Port Harcourt, last week.
According to the father of the alleged defilement victim, Mr. Prince, when they arrived at the scene of the crime, which is their compound, the suspect, who was not handcuffed by the Investigating Police Officer, was having difficulty opening the padlock on his door.
Prince stated that he suggested they use a hammer to break the padlock, and after taking an excuse from the IPO, he went to his apartment downstairs to retrieve the hammer.
Upon returning with the hammer, Prince was informed by the IPO that the suspect had escaped.
Prince said, "He ran in the direction the IPO claimed the suspect took, but he did not see the suspect."
A lawyer, Gbenga Oladapo, Executive Director of Lawyers Watch Justice International Initiative, described the development as ridiculous.
Oladapo stated, "It is extremely ridiculous that the police would come out and say that. This is not just negligence; it is a betrayal of the victim, her family, and every Nigerian child who deserves protection under the law."
"The police should do everything in their power to declare a manhunt and re-arrest this man, ensuring he faces the law in record time," Oladapo added.
"If the suspect is not re-arrested, the police would have failed the public and denied the victim justice. This is not good for the entire society, particularly the Nigerian child," Oladapo emphasized.
When contacted, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, Blessing Agabe, confirmed the escape of the suspect and stated that the police would ensure his re-arrest.
Agabe, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, said, "Yes, I am aware that he escaped, and one of the policemen is being queried with respect to the escape. However, an order has been given for his re-arrest, and we shall make it known to the press when he is re-arrested."
