The New Zealand sporting community is mourning the loss of Eugene Hanna, who has passed away at the age of 30 following a serious injury suffered during a rugby league match.
The heartbreaking news was confirmed by his club, the Glenora Bears, whose chairwoman Janet Hunt shared an emotional statement on social media.
According to the club, Hanna sustained a critical injury during the team’s opening game of the season against Te Atatu Roosters roughly 10 days before his passing on Tuesday, May 12.
Hunt described Eugene as a valued member of the Premier Reserves squad and someone who had quickly built strong friendships within the club despite being a relatively new addition to the Bears family.
She also thanked the opposing team, emergency responders and medical staff at Auckland Hospital for their efforts following the incident.
“To his family, friends and teammates we extend our sincere condolences,” the statement read. “Forever in our hearts.”
New Zealand Rugby League also paid tribute, describing the situation as heartbreaking and something no one within the sport ever wants to witness.
Beyond rugby, Eugene was also deeply involved in football and was remembered fondly by teammates and clubs connected to that side of his life as well.
His football club, Renegades FC, shared an emotional message describing him as the “heartbeat” of the team.
“He was the biggest character, a brilliant player, but most importantly the kindest person,” the club wrote.
Another former club, Lynn-Avon United AFC, also honoured him with a tribute, remembering him as a genuinely good person who was well known and respected throughout the club community.
