Former NFL lineman Josh Mauro’s death ruled accidental due to drug intoxication
The death of former NFL defensive lineman Josh Mauro has been ruled accidental, according to an Arizona medical examiner. Officials determined that the cause of death was acute intoxication from a combination of fentanyl, cocaine, and alcohol.
Mauro, 35, died on April 23. His passing was confirmed at the time by the Arizona Cardinals, Las Vegas Raiders, and his family, though no cause was initially disclosed. Authorities later released the findings following an official examination.
Standing 6-foot-6 and weighing 290 pounds during his playing career, Mauro spent six seasons with the Cardinals and also played for the New York Giants and the then-Oakland Raiders. His most productive year came in 2016, when he appeared in 15 games with Arizona, starting 13 and recording 32 tackles.
Mauro played college football at Stanford and finished his NFL career with the Cardinals in 2021. Over eight seasons in the league, he appeared in 80 games, starting 40, and recorded five sacks.
In a statement following his death, the Cardinals expressed their condolences, saying they were heartbroken by the loss and extended their thoughts to Mauro’s family, friends, and all who knew him.
