U.S Postal Service unveils bald eagle stamps for America’s 250th birthday celebration

The U.S. Postal Service is marking America’s 250th birthday with a new set of special edition stamps featuring one of the nation’s most recognizable symbols: the bald eagle. Unveiled at the National Eagle Center in Wabasha, Minnesota, the collection highlights the bird through five stages of life, from a small hatchling to the iconic white-headed adult that appears on the Great Seal. The stamps are now available for purchase nationwide.

Officials say the design reflects both the life cycle of the eagle and the broader story of the United States itself. A Postal Service historian involved in the project said the imagery mirrors the nation’s own development, comparing the early stages of the eagle’s life to the country’s beginnings. The bald eagle has represented the United States since the adoption of the Great Seal in 1782 and was officially named the national bird in 2024, long associated with strength, freedom, and independence.

The eagle’s symbolism also includes a dramatic conservation comeback. Once nearing disappearance in the mid-20th century due to the pesticide DDT, populations declined sharply before environmental action, including a 1972 ban and endangered species protections, helped reverse the trend. By 2007, the species was removed from the endangered list, and current estimates place the population at more than 300,000 across the continental United States.

The stamp collection was created by artist and bird illustrator David Sibley, who spent nearly a year developing the digital artwork. Known for detailed depictions of birds at life-size scale, he adapted his style for the much smaller stamp format by focusing on close-up details, particularly the eagle’s head, to preserve visual clarity. He said the goal was to encourage people to see the bird not just as a symbol, but as part of a living ecosystem.

Postal officials noted that stamps often serve as both cultural markers and educational tools, quietly reflecting national identity in small, detailed designs.
