Speaking during an interview on Television on Friday, May 29, 2026, the retired Lieutenant General stressed that democracy remains far superior to military rule and reaffirmed the Armed Forces’ unwavering commitment to defending the nation’s democratic system.
Musa, who revealed his direct involvement in foiling a recent coup plot, said he and other senior officers identified and reported the scheme. He chaired the investigative committee that probed the matter.
He described those behind the alleged plot as “confused individuals” who misled junior officers into participating.
“What we are trying to do now is to show the junior ones that a coup doesn’t pay anything. Democracy is far, far better than any military regime,” Musa said.
The Defence Minister disclosed that the investigation was thorough, with prosecution currently ongoing and a court-martial scheduled to proceed. He assured that the accused are being given full opportunity to defend themselves in line with due process.
Musa also highlighted improved welfare in the Armed Forces, noting that there have been no issues with salaries, while efforts are being made to increase allowances and provide more equipment for troops engaged in anti-insurgency operations.
“Anybody who is thinking of planning a coup, I think he’s just wasting their time. Even the civilians in Nigeria will have taken them down,” he added.
The minister described the coup attempt as unfortunate, especially at a time when the country was making progress and the military was being well catered for.
