Neal McDonough has once again spoken about the challenges he faced in Hollywood after setting strict boundaries on set.
The veteran actor, known for roles in Minority Report, Suits, Desperate Housewives, Band of Brothers, and Tulsa King, has long maintained a personal rule of not kissing women on screen out of respect for his wife, Ruve.
He revealed that this choice led to him being fired from projects and even blacklisted, with some in the industry labeling him a “religious nut bag.”
McDonough admitted that the fallout fueled his struggles with alcoholism and left him feeling like he had failed his family.
He recalled losing his home and sense of identity, describing the period as a “crucifixion” that caused deep inner pain. During that time, he leaned on the support of late actor Luke Perry, who encouraged him when work was scarce.
Despite the setbacks, McDonough credits his wife and faith with helping him rebuild his life. Together, they now run a production company, and he says he feels stronger and more fulfilled than ever.
Reflecting on his journey, McDonough explained that Hollywood’s rejection was devastating, stripping him of not just material possessions but also his confidence and sense of self.
He said that for two years he couldn’t get a job, which left him in a tailspin. Today, however, he has found stability, starring in projects like Tulsa King and producing films such as the Jimmy Stewart biopic Jimmy.
For McDonough, the hardships underscored the importance of staying true to his values, even when it meant facing professional consequences.
