The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called for the immediate release of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, describing him as a “prisoner of conscience.”
The resolution was among the key decisions reached during the party’s 101st NEC meeting held in Abuja on Saturday.
The meeting also saw the ratification of recent primary election results and the approval of major organisational reforms ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a communiqué signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC stated that its NEC unanimously recognised El-Rufai as a victim of political persecution and demanded his freedom.
“The NEC recognises Mallam Nasiru El-Rufai as a prisoner of conscience and calls for his immediate release,” the statement read.
The declaration is expected to intensify political discussions surrounding El-Rufai’s situation, especially considering his growing ties with opposition groups seeking to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
A prisoner of conscience is generally defined as a person detained or punished for their beliefs, identity, or peaceful expression without advocating or engaging in violence.
Beyond the call for El-Rufai’s release, the ADC also focused on strengthening its internal structures in preparation for future elections.
According to the communiqué, the NEC approved the outcomes of recently conducted primaries for State Houses of Assembly, National Assembly, governorship, and presidential elections nationwide. However, contests with unresolved appeals as of May 29, 2026, as well as primaries yet to be concluded, were excluded from the approval.
“NEC approved the results of all recently conducted primaries for State Houses of Assembly, the National Assembly, State Governors, and the Presidential elections, except those with pending appeals as at May 29, 2026, and those yet to be concluded,” the party stated.
The decision follows complaints and petitions from some aspirants regarding the conduct of primaries in certain states.
Party leaders stressed the importance of protecting internal democracy while resolving disputes through established party channels.
The NEC also approved a 12-month extension of the tenure of the National Working Committee (NWC), allowing the current leadership to remain in office during a crucial period leading up to the 2027 elections.
“NEC approved the extension of the tenure of the National Working Committee (NWC) for a period of 12 months from the expiry of their current tenure,” the communiqué noted.
The extension is expected to ensure leadership continuity as the party works to strengthen its structures, expand membership, and position itself as a strong opposition force.
Additionally, the NEC approved the establishment of caretaker committees at the zonal, state, local government, and ward levels for a one-year period.
“NEC approved the constitution of the Caretaker Committees at the Zonal, State, Local Government and Wards for a period of 12 months,” the statement added.
