Matt Brown Found Dead at 42, Brother Bear Shares Heartbreaking Update

Matt Brown, the eldest son of the Brown family featured on Alaskan Bush People, has passed away at the age of 42.

His brother, Solomon Isaiah “Bear” Brown, shared the news in an emotional Instagram video, revealing that Matt was found in Washington on May 30.

“They found a body in the river a few hours ago, and it was positively identified as being Matt,” Bear said.

Before the confirmation, Bear had told followers that the family believed Matt may have taken his own life. Following the discovery, he admitted the news came as a shock.

“I would have never suspected he would have hurt himself, honestly,” Bear explained. “He struggled for a long time, as I've mentioned, and I worried he was going to end up with an overdose or something like that. I didn't think he would hurt himself.”

Bear added that authorities were still carrying out their work, but said initial indications suggested the injury may have been self-inflicted.

According to Bear, their brother, Noah Brown, was present at the scene and assisted with recovering Matt from the water before helping with the identification process.

The confirmation came shortly after Bear posted a TikTok video discussing reports surrounding Matt's disappearance. At the time, he said he had heard the claims but could not independently verify them.

“I can’t confirm that it’s 100% true right now, but it is what I’m hearing,” he said.

Bear also reflected on one of the last conversations he had with Matt. The brothers had unexpectedly crossed paths at a Walmart before Bear left for Florida.

“He called me after that, and he said that he had fallen off the wagon,” Bear recalled. “And I was like, ‘Well, get back on it, man. Everybody falls off. Just get back on it. Go to rehab if you’ve got to. You’ve got this.’”

In his message to supporters, Bear asked people to show compassion toward the family, particularly their mother, Ami Brown.

“Please be respectful to the family, to my mom especially,” he said. “Please don’t attack my mom. Mom cares very much for Matt and always has.”

Matt, the son of Ami and the late Billy Brown, became known to viewers through the reality series Alaskan Bush People, which followed the family’s unconventional life in the wilderness.

He appeared on the show from its 2014 debut until stepping away in 2019 as he dealt with addiction challenges. In later years, Matt largely stayed out of the public eye, occasionally sharing updates through social media and YouTube.

Matt had previously spoken openly about his struggles with alcohol and his decision to seek treatment. In a 2016 interview, he acknowledged that his drinking had become a problem and said he realized he was making what he described as “bad choices.”
