A private aircraft that was scheduled to pick up former baseball star Yadier Molina and his family in Texas crashed in the Dominican Republic, resulting in the loss of both crew members on board.
According to airport officials, the accident happened on June 7 at La Romana International Airport.
The aircraft, a Gulfstream 200, had only two people on board, pilot Erick Javier Diago and co-pilot Ruddy Ghazal, both American citizens.
Authorities said the jet had departed for Austin, Texas, but encountered difficulties shortly after takeoff. The crew reportedly attempted to return to the airport for an emergency landing before the situation turned tragic.
Video footage circulating online appears to show the aircraft making a hard landing on the runway before bouncing several times. Moments later, it struck the ground again and burst into flames.
Molina later confirmed that the aircraft had been scheduled to collect him, his family and friends in Texas before taking them to Puerto Rico.
In a message shared on social media, the former catcher expressed sympathy for the crew members and their loved ones.
"My condolences to the pilots and their families," Molina wrote. "This plane was on its way to pick up me, my family and friends in Texas to return to Puerto Rico. This is all so heartbreaking."
Dominican authorities have launched an investigation to determine what caused the crash.
Molina, 43, is widely regarded as one of baseball's most accomplished catchers. He spent his entire Major League Baseball career with the St. Louis Cardinals, playing 19 seasons before retiring in 2022.
