Rapper and music producer Soulja Boy was arrested early Sunday morning in Los Angeles after being found in possession of a firearm during a traffic stop, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Authorities said the 35-year-old performer, whose real name is DeAndre Cortez Way, was pulled over around 2:35 a.m. at the intersection of Melrose and Genesee avenues. Officers stated that a passenger was detained at the scene, and Way was taken into custody on charges of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, which is classified as a felony offense. Records show the arrest was processed at approximately 2:50 a.m., though details regarding his release status or current location have not been disclosed.
This latest arrest adds to a series of legal issues that have surrounded Way in recent years. Earlier this year, a California jury found him liable for sexually assaulting and physically and emotionally abusing a former assistant, awarding the woman $4 million in damages after a three-week trial. His legal team argued at the time that the evidence did not support the verdict and expressed intentions to pursue appeals. In addition to that case, multiple women have filed lawsuits against Way in previous years alleging abuse, assault, and false imprisonment. Despite these controversies, Soulja Boy remains widely known for his 2007 hit single "Crank That (Soulja Boy)," which topped the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and launched his career into mainstream success.
