 Trial begins of Central African ex-president Bozize over war crimes A UN-backed court in the the Central African Republic will on Tuesday begin the trial in absentia of former president Francois Bozize, over crimes against humanity committed between 2009 and 2013. The alleged crimes committed by members of Bozize's security forces include murder, enforced disappearance, torture and rape. Bozize, 79, who seized power in a 2003 coup before being overthrown 10 years later by rebels, has been living in exile in Guinea-Bissau since March 2023. But three of his former senior military officers, Eugene Barret Ngaikosset, Vianney Semndiro and Firmin Junior Danboy, are all in pre-trial detention in the Central African Republic. Crimes against humanity The case will be heard by the Special Criminal Court (SCC), a hybrid jurisdiction located in the capital Bangui with Central African and foreign judges.  Former Prince Andrew freed by police, Trump criticizes arrest as ‘a shame’

British authorities released Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, the former prince and brother of King Charles III, on Thursday after detaining him earlier on suspicion of misconduct in public office. The details of the investigation remain under wraps, though the arrest comes amid renewed scrutiny of his past ties to the late Jeffrey Epstein following the release of millions of documents by the U.S. Department of Justice.

Thames Valley Police, who initially arrested Mountbatten-Windsor without naming him, said they were reviewing allegations that he sent confidential trade reports to Epstein in 2010 while serving as Britain’s special envoy for international trade. The 60-something Norfolk resident has now been released under investigation. Police added that their Norfolk searches are complete, though work in Berkshire continues. King Charles expressed concern over the arrest, emphasizing that “the law must take its course,” while President Donald Trump called it “a shame” and “very sad” for the royal family. Mountbatten-Windsor has consistently denied wrongdoing related to Epstein, including allegations of sexually assaulting Virginia Giuffre when she was 17. He previously settled a lawsuit with Giuffre in 2022 without admitting guilt, making a substantial donation to her charity in support of victims’ rights. Giuffre died by suicide last April, and Epstein victim Maria Farmer said Thursday’s events mark “the beginning of accountability and justice” for survivors.
