 2026 Inter-House Fiesta and Sports Competition: St. John of God Secondary School Awka Concludes it in Grand Style

Excitement and celebration filled the air as St. John of God Secondary School, Awka, one of Anambra State's foremost girls' secondary schools, successfully concluded the grand finale of its 2026 Inter-House Fiesta and Sports Competition.


Founded in 1964, the institution showcased its rich tradition of excellence as students competed in various sporting and extracurricular activities designed to promote teamwork, discipline and healthy competition.


Eight houses participated in the competition, with some of the major highlights including the presentation of the Best Behaved House Award to Bishop Paulinus Ezeokafor Yellow House and the crowning of Camillus House as the overall winner after emerging with the highest number of medals.


In a welcome address jointly delivered by the School Manager, Rev. Fr. Malachy Maduewesi, Assistant Manager, Rev. Fr. Kingsley Igboanugo, and the Principal, Rev. Sr. Dr. Onwuadi, the school authorities described the event as a significant milestone in the institution's efforts to promote holistic education.


They noted that the fiesta and sports competition marks the beginning of a broader vision to encourage excellence beyond the classroom, expressing optimism that future editions would be even more impactful.


According to them, the event is expected to become an annual tradition featuring competitions in quiz, debate, music, arts and culture, sports and other co-curricular activities aimed at nurturing well-rounded students.


The management appealed to stakeholders and well-meaning individuals to support ongoing efforts to strengthen the programme, disclosing plans to procure and customise about 1,500 house jerseys and tracksuits for students and teacher moderators, a project estimated to cost about ₦6.5 million, with ₦3.5 million still required for completion.


The school highlighted the need for the construction of steel barricades around the school field and main avenue to protect flowers, ornamental trees.and other landscaping features within the premises.


Speaking at the event, the Education Secretary of the Awka Catholic Diocese, Rev. Fr. Maximus Okonkwo, who represented Bishop Paulinus Ezeokafor, underscored the importance of inter-house competitions in fostering academic excellence, leadership qualities, teamwork, and the overall development of students.


In his vote of thanks, Rev. Fr. Maduewesi expressed appreciation to the school's management, the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), the Old Girls Association, teaching and non-teaching staff, parents, and other stakeholders for their unwavering support towards the growth and development of the college.


The colourful event, which attracted students, parents, alumni, and distinguished guests, further reinforced the school's commitment to academic excellence, character formation, and talent development.
