2026 World Cup: Why Hannover Defender Ime Okon Chose South Africa Over Nigeria
Bafana Bafana defender Ime Okon has opened up about his decision to represent South Africa instead of Nigeria, declaring that his heart has always belonged to the country he calls home.
The 21-year-old Hannover defender, who was born to a Nigerian father and a South African mother, is currently representing South Africa at the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America. Okon played a pivotal role in Bafana Bafana's recent match, featuring for the full 90 minutes in their 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic.
A Decision Rooted in Identity
Speaking in a video clip shared by prominent Nigerian journalist Osasu Obayiuwana, Okon put to rest any speculation regarding his international allegiance. Despite being eligible to play for both African nations, the rising star explained that the decision to wear the South African jersey was a natural one.
"I don’t know what to say, but at the end of the day, I know where my heart lies," Okon said. "I have played for South Africa in the COSAFA games and I scored. South Africa is everything to me. I don’t know anything besides South Africa. That is home."
No Serious Approaches from Nigeria
When questioned about whether the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) had reached out to him to convince him to play for the Super Eagles, Okon revealed there had been no serious pursuit from the West African giants. However, he emphasized that even an approach from Nigeria would not have altered his decision.
"No, not really. But even if they call me, South Africa is my home. That’s what I have to say," the center-back stated firmly.
Contrasting Fortunes for South Africa and Nigeria
Okon’s rise as one of South Africa’s brightest defensive prospects coincides with a strong period for Bafana Bafana on the global stage. In contrast, Nigeria’s Super Eagles failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking another disappointing qualification cycle after also missing out on the previous tournament in Qatar.
