Abelardo De la Espriella, a conservative lawyer with no previous experience in elected office, is positioned to become Colombia's next president following preliminary results from Sunday's runoff election.
With 99% of the nationwide vote tallied, De la Espriella has secured 49.7% of the vote. If these results are finalized, he will defeat veteran left-wing politician Senator Iván Cepeda.
De la Espriella, who holds dual U.S. and Colombian citizenship, centered his campaign on a strict anti-crime agenda. Prompted by escalating violence across the South American nation, he pledged to construct 10 mega-prisons, drawing direct inspiration from the stringent security measures enacted by El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele.
His candidacy received a major boost earlier this month with an endorsement from Donald Trump. In a post on Truth Social, Trump emphasized the significance of the election for bilateral relations, praising De la Espriella's life achievements and offering his total endorsement.
Following the release of the initial tallies, outgoing Colombian President Gustavo Petro raised concerns online, pointing to purported irregularities at various polling stations.
Analysts view the tight race as a reflection of a deeply polarized electorate. Experts note that the vote demonstrates a country split down the middle, with half of the population backing an aggressive security crackdown and the other half favoring comprehensive social and economic reforms. Moving forward, the incoming administration will face the challenge of finding a middle ground to bridge these political extremes and unite the nation.
Should his victory be officially confirmed, De la Espriella is poised to become one of Latin America's most prominent conservative voices. His presidency is widely expected to fortify Colombia's alignment with Washington.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio extended early congratulations on social media, expressing optimism for Colombia's future. Rubio stated that the Trump administration anticipates working closely with the new government to bolster regional security, curb undocumented immigration, and deepen economic partnerships.
