Keir Starmer resigns, leadership transition process begins
Keir Starmer has confirmed he will step down as leader of the Labour Party, ending his tenure at the head of the UK government.
The announcement came on Monday in London, where he addressed staff and the public outside 10 Downing Street.
He said he had accepted that his party no longer wanted him to continue leading into the next election.
“The question my party is asking now is whether I am best placed to lead us into the next election. I have heard the answer… and I accept that answer with good grace,” he said. “I will resign as leader of the Labour Party.”
Starmer added that he would remain in post only for a short transitional period, depending on how quickly a successor is chosen.
If Labour unites behind a single candidate, the change in leadership could take place by July. If a contest is held, the process may extend into September when Parliament returns from its summer break.
He also said he would support whoever takes over, describing that commitment as part of ensuring continuity within the party.
During his remarks, Starmer referred to his time in office and said his attention would now turn to family life after leaving frontline politics, mentioning his wife Victoria and their children.
His departure follows several weeks of internal pressure within Labour after a difficult set of local election results earlier in the year.
Party discussions intensified after former Manchester mayor Andy Burnham emerged as a potential challenger and returned to Parliament as an MP, a move that placed him within the eligible pool for future leadership consideration.
Burnham had previously been prevented from standing in a separate local election by Labour leadership figures, a decision widely seen as part of internal party strategy at the time.
Speculation around Starmer’s position had increased in recent weeks, as more Labour MPs publicly and privately questioned whether he should continue leading the party into the next general election.
The transition now leaves Labour preparing for a leadership process that will determine its next prime minister, depending on the outcome of internal party procedures.
