Abia APC Denies Imposing Non-Member as Governorship Candidate, Declares Primary Transparent
The Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has firmly rejected allegations that it allowed a non-member of the party to emerge as winner of its governorship primary election.
The party’s reaction came on Monday following threats by some top members, including Mezie Chiekwe Esiaga and Ndubuisi Eme, who last week warned that the APC would face a major defeat in the 2027 governorship election if the ticket was not handed to former Minister of State for Science and Technology, Henry Ikoh.
Addressing journalists at the party’s secretariat in Umuahia, Abia APC Publicity Secretary, Uche Aguoru, described the primary election won by Eric Opah as transparent and free from manipulation.
Aguoru dismissed claims that the party imposed a non-member as its candidate, insisting that Opah has been a committed and grounded member of the APC long before the primary exercise.
“Opah was not smuggled in through the back door. He is a legitimate and longstanding member of the party,” Aguoru stated.
According to the results announced by the party, Eric Opah polled a total of 125,977 votes to defeat Henry Ikoh, who scored 5,905 votes.
The Publicity Secretary further alleged that the members threatening to work against the party ahead of the 2027 election were sponsored by an opposition party in the state with the aim of embarrassing the APC.
He boasted that the Abia APC remains united and solidly prepared for the 2027 polls, contrasting the party’s cohesion with the Labour Party, which he said is currently divided into two factions.
The Abia APC assured its members and the public that the party is focused on presenting a strong and credible candidate for the next governorship election.
