Extreme heat and high winds fuel Western wildfires as Utah town is evacuated

Extreme heat, parched terrain, and strong winds intensified multiple wildfires across the Western United States on Sunday, including an uncontained blaze in Utah that triggered the evacuation of a small town.

The Iron Fire, located in Utah's Juab County, expanded to 34 square miles after being detected on Saturday. Situated roughly 70 miles southwest of Salt Lake City, the growing wildfire forced approximately 1,000 residents from the town of Eureka, as well as occupants of a nearby ranch, to flee their homes.

Firefighters successfully utilized backburn operations to shield Eureka, and no homes have been destroyed. However, fire officials warned that the human-caused blaze is still growing due to prevalent drought conditions. The exact cause remains under investigation.

Utah Governor Spencer J. Cox visited Eureka on Sunday, noting that officials anticipated extreme fire danger across the state, where six active wildfires are currently burning at various containment levels.

The heightened fire risk extended into neighboring states, driven by an intense regional heatwave and widespread drought. In southwestern Colorado, gusty winds and low humidity prompted a red flag warning through Monday. Meanwhile, in Arizona, an uncontained 300-acre wildfire burning through steep terrain near Sedona's Oak Creek Canyon kept local residents displaced from their homes over the weekend.

The dangerous weather pattern has brought above-average temperatures from the Rockies to the Pacific Coast, with even higher temperatures forecast for early next week. The extreme conditions have already turned tragic, following the heat-related deaths of three hikers in the Grand Canyon last week. Temperatures in the Southwest were projected to climb even higher on Sunday, with Carlsbad, New Mexico, bracing for a high of 108 degrees Fahrenheit.

The wildfire activity was not entirely contained to the West, as a separate brush fire on Saturday scorched 2,000 acres in Florida's Miami-Dade County.
