Peter Murrell, former chief executive of the SNP and husband of Nicola Sturgeon, has been sentenced to five years and three months in prison after admitting embezzling more than £400,000 from the party.
Murrell, 61, appeared at the High Court in Edinburgh for sentencing after pleading guilty last month to a charge of embezzlement covering a period of 12 years.
The court heard that the offences took place while he was serving as the party’s chief executive, with funds being used for personal spending over time.
During proceedings, Judge Lord Young said Murrell carried out a large number of fraudulent acts over an extended period and noted that the conduct continued until it was detected.
He also said the offending increased in both frequency and value over time and described it as a calculated pattern of dishonesty.
Details presented to the court included spending on vehicles, jewellery, travel items, household goods, electronics, and other personal purchases. Items were reported to have been delivered to the family home in Uddingston, Lanarkshire.
Murrell, who has also been referred to by the nickname “Sneaky Pete” in earlier reporting, admitted to embezzling party funds that had been set aside for political activities.
The case first came to light after police were asked to investigate missing funds within the party. Authorities had been examining money that officials said was intended for a possible second independence referendum.
Murrell was sentenced following his guilty plea last month.
