Umahi: South-East Leaders Pursue Political Solution for Nnamdi Kanu’s Release, Back Tinubu’s Presidency

Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has revealed that political and traditional leaders from the South-East are actively exploring political avenues to secure the release of detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu, while simultaneously working to maintain peace and stability in the region.

Umahi made the disclosure on Monday during an inspection tour of Section II of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project in Epe, Lagos State. He emphasised that Ebonyi State and the broader South-East remain firmly supportive of President Bola Tinubu and are not aligned with the Obidient Movement.

The minister stressed the importance of honesty, accountability, and proven governance records for anyone aspiring to the presidency, warning that no politician can succeed through deception.

Reacting to viral social media reports claiming that former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi vowed to discontinue some of President Tinubu’s flagship infrastructure projects if elected, Umahi described the alleged statement as “very painful.”

“When my brother, Peter Obi, said, as I saw on social media, that he would stop the legacy projects, that was a very painful statement. I hope he did not say so. But I know Nigerians will reject that position,” he said.

Umahi noted that South-East governors and other stakeholders are making concerted efforts to promote peace in the region and are engaging relevant authorities on Kanu’s continued detention.

“The governors of the South-East are doing everything possible, and we are supporting them in ensuring a peaceful South-East while also exploring political ways of helping our brother, Nnamdi Kanu,” he added.

The Works Minister was, however, critical of Peter Obi’s approach to issues affecting the South-East, particularly insecurity and the weekly Monday sit-at-home order enforced in parts of the region.

“Nobody should joke with the thousands of South-East people who were killed in the process. He has not been honest with our people. People sit at home every Monday, and he has not spoken against it,” Umahi said.

“He simply wants to become President by all means, and that is not good for our people. Let us know the truth. Deceit will not help us.”

Umahi further described the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway as a landmark project reflecting President Tinubu’s bold vision for economic and infrastructural development.

“This project, which someone is said to have promised to stop, and I hope he never said so, is highly innovative,” he remarked.

He challenged supporters of the Obidient Movement to objectively compare the governance records of Tinubu as Lagos State Governor and Obi as Anambra State Governor, particularly their master plans and the longevity of projects initiated during their tenures.

According to the minister, ongoing infrastructure initiatives, including developments along the River Niger corridor, are expected to significantly enhance economic opportunities across the South-East and the entire country.
