Barack Obama says he is still active, but he is no longer interested in playing full basketball games.
During an interview with PEOPLE alongside Michelle Obama, the former U.S. president said he would not be taking part in pickup games at the new Home Court gym at the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago.
Instead, Obama said he would be happy to join others for a game of Horse or shooting competitions.
"I am not running up and down that court because I want to protect my knees and my Achilles. I don't want to be in a boot," he said.
The 64-year-old added that he still feels physically fit but is more mindful about movements that could lead to injury.
"I'm in good shape if I'm just running north south. You start getting me sideways and I start worrying about something kind of going wrong," he explained.
Obama also acknowledged that Michelle has been more consistent with stretching and flexibility exercises than he has.
He said improving flexibility is now one of his fitness goals.
The former president added with a smile that yoga could be part of that plan, saying, "Put our yoga mats down and all that. Namaste."
