Former President Bill Clinton expressed optimism about the Democratic Party’s outlook following three socialist victories in New York primaries. Speaking to Fox News Digital on June 25, Clinton said he believes Democrats are “in good shape” heading into the midterm elections.
The wins by Darializa Avila Chevalier, Brad Lander, and Claire Valdez all backed by the Democratic Socialists of America have sparked discussion over whether progressive candidates represent a viable path to national success.
Clinton, who has historically aligned with more moderate Democrats, appeared unfazed by the results. He previously endorsed Andrew Cuomo in the New York City mayoral primary against socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani, who ultimately defeated Cuomo in 2025.
His stance reflects the ongoing tension within the party as it grapples with ideological divisions, balancing the appeal of progressive platforms with the caution of mainstream Democrats who defend capitalism and warn against embracing socialism as the party’s brand.
The latest primary outcomes underscore the broader struggle over the Democratic Party’s identity. While some members see socialist candidates as energizing and representative of a growing movement, others worry about alienating centrist voters.
Clinton’s reassurance suggests confidence in the party’s ability to unify and succeed despite these internal debates, framing the victories as part of a larger, evolving conversation about the Democrats’ future direction.
