An Indiana man was caught st@bbing a lost dog multiple times. Police showed up after multiple and outraged neighbors swarmed his home.
A 2-year-old Husky named 'Shadow' was ultimately euthanized after suffering multiple puncture wounds while tied up and completely unable to escape.
Shadow's attacker, 38-year-old Tony Hughes, did not know the dog or the dog's owner. Despite multiple changing stories, there seems to be no reason for this cruel and horrendous crime.
Police were first made aware of the situation on Saturday, June 6th, in the town of Portage, Indiana.
Officers were dispatched to a home on the 600 block of Camelot Manor at approximately 12:30 a.m. after a crowd of angry neighbors had gathered outside of Hughes's home.
The crowd gathered after a man and woman had heard a dog yelping in pain. They went outside to see what was happening and were met with a disturbing scene.
Tony Hughes had Shadow tied to a stairwell and was repeatedly st@bbing the defenseless dog. According to the eyewitnesses, Shadow never appeared aggressive even while being ruthlessly attacked.
Officers would also report that the sweet 2-year-old Husky never showed any aggression, even while they were transporting him to seek treatment. Unfortunately, Shadow was injured beyond the vets ability to treat, and he was ultimately euthanized.
When being questioned by police about the incident, Hughes would change his story multiple times. He claimed that Shadow had bit him on the arm. Officers stated there were "no bite marks on his arm" or "damage to his sweatshirt".
Hughes also has multiple stories on how he came to possess Shadow. He first told officers someone had given Shadow to him while he was at Dollar General. Then, he made claims about looking for the owner at a nearby gas station. None of Hughes's stories really made sense; it was ultimately determined that Shadow had followed him home. Once at his home, Hughes tied Shadow to a stairwell and carried out his sick attack.
Authorities report Shadow had been punctured nearly a dozen times. Shadow's owners were easily located by scanning the pup's microchip. They had to make the awful decision to have their lost dog euthanized due to Hughes's actions.
Tony Hughes was charged with k***ing a domestic animal, t*rt*r*ng an animal, and theft for not attempting to locate Shadow's owners.
Tony Hughes had his bond set at only $3,000 and he is due in court on Thursday, June 11th.
Our thoughts are with everyone involved.
