Police have arrested five suspects, aged 14 to 27, for allegedly breaking into container tuck shops in Woody Glen, Hammarsdale, west of Durban, in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said officers responded to reports of people breaking into tuck shops.
One suspect was arrested inside a shop, while four others were cornered as they tried to flee. They face charges of malicious damage to property and business burglary and are expected in court soon.
Netshiunda said police cannot rule out that the suspects were “opportunists taking advantage of Tuesday’s marches against undocumented foreign nationals”.
Netshiunda urged march participants to refrain from criminal activity. “Police are deployed to safeguard the marches, but will enforce the law where necessary.”
SAPS said the overall situation is calm, but confirmed other arrests linked to protest.
Gauteng Police Commissioner Lt-Gen Tommy Mthombeni said 8 people have been arrested since 28 June.
