The Anambra State Commissioner for Power and Water Resources, Engr. Casmir Chinenye Agummadu, on July 9 received a delegation from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and other government representatives at his office in Awka to address right-of-way challenges affecting key electricity transmission projects in the state.
Welcoming the delegation on behalf of the Anambra State Government, Engr. Agummadu commended the team for its commitment to resolving the issues hindering the progress of critical power infrastructure projects, describing the timely resolution of the challenges as a priority for the state government because of their direct impact on improving electricity supply and supporting economic growth.
The commissioner assured the delegation of the government’s readiness to work with host communities, relevant stakeholders and government agencies to create an enabling environment for the immediate resumption and successful completion of the projects.
Speaking during the meeting, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Power and Water Resources, Mr. Victor Ezekwo, said the engagement was aimed at removing bottlenecks surrounding the acquisition of right-of-way for the construction of transmission line foundations, particularly in Nnobi and Nnewi.
Explaining the project, the Project and Transmission Line Engineer at TCN, Engr. Kefas Baduku, said the transmission line project was initiated to strengthen the national grid, improve wheeling capacity and connect more communities in Anambra State to reliable electricity supply.
According to him, the transmission line extends from the Obosi Substation through Oba to Ihiala, noting that enumeration exercises had earlier been conducted in Otolo, Ichi, Awka-Etiti, Osumenyi and Akwaihedi in 2016. However, work in Nnobi has stalled due to difficulties associated with land constraints and security concerns.
Engr. Baduku expressed confidence that collaboration among the Commissioners for Power and Water Resources, Lands, Physical Planning and Urban Development, as well as other stakeholders, would accelerate the implementation of the project, emphasizing that dialogue and cooperation remain the most effective approach to overcoming the existing challenges.
He commended the Anambra State Government for demonstrating strong administrative capacity and political will in reviving the project, describing the intervention as timely, identifing right-of-way acquisition and security concerns as the major obstacles that have delayed the transmission line project over the years.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Anambra State Electricity Regulatory Commission (ASERC), Engr. Frank Okafor, expressed satisfaction with the state’s growing commitment to the power sector, applauding the commissioner, the TCN delegation and other stakeholders for working collaboratively to remove barriers to electricity infrastructure development.
Engr. Okafor expressed optimism that the meeting would pave the way for the successful execution of the transmission line project, thereby enhancing electricity supply and supporting socio-economic development across Anambra State.
