The Chairman of Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, Chief Stanley Nkwoka, has warned revenue collectors against harassing industries under the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN).
Nkwoka gave the warning during a stakeholders' engagement between MAN and local government authorities in Anambra State, held in Onitsha on July 1.
He described the reported harassment of manufacturers by revenue collectors as worrisome and directed that no tax collector should approach any MAN member company until a joint committee comprising representatives of local governments and MAN is constituted to harmonise tax administration.
The chairman also advised against issuing multiple demand notices to manufacturers, insisting that companies should receive only one harmonised tax demand.
"I am not in support of companies being harassed by revenue collectors. Things should be done in an organised manner," he said.
Earlier, the Chairman of MAN, Anambra, Enugu and Ebonyi States Branch, Dr (Mrs) Ada Chukwudozie, said the meeting was convened in response to growing concerns over the activities of unauthorised revenue collectors, multiple tax demands and uncertainty surrounding taxes and levies.
She said manufacturers were committed to paying legitimate taxes but required clarity, transparency and a predictable tax administration framework that would enable businesses to operate without unnecessary disruptions.
According to Chukwudozie, MAN had constituted a committee to identify the various taxes, levies and fees paid by manufacturers to generate evidence-based data for advocacy and constructive engagement with government.
The meeting was attended by the Chairman of the Anambra State Mayors' Forum and Mayor of Aguata Local Government Area, Dr Chibueze Ofobuike, other council mayors, senior government officials and members of the organised private sector.
