Onitsha Market Leader Lauds Soludo's Sanitation Drive, Calls for Prompt Waste Evacuation

‎By Ebele Iyke Odili

‎The Chairman of Onitsha Main Market and Vice Chairman of Omagba Phase II, Onitsha, Mr. Chijioke Okpalaugo, has praised the Anambra State Government for the successful conduct of the mandatory environmental sanitation exercise held on July 4, describing the level of public participation as impressive.

‎Speaking after monitoring the exercise, Mr.  Okpalaugo said residents, traders and other stakeholders in Omagba Phase II turned out in large numbers to clean their surroundings and clear blocked drainage channels, demonstrating their commitment to a cleaner environment.

‎He commended the Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, for sustaining the environmental sanitation initiative, noting that it is particularly important during the rainy season when blocked drains often contribute to flooding.

‎According to him, regular desilting of gutters and drainage channels will improve the free flow of rainwater, reduce flooding and erosion, and promote a healthier and cleaner environment across communities.

‎The chairman, appealed to the state government to direct Mayors of all local government areas to ensure that debris and silt removed from drainage channels are promptly evacuated and properly disposed of, rather than being left along roadsides where they could be washed back into the drains by rainfall.

‎He emphasized that effective waste evacuation is essential to achieving the objectives of the sanitation exercise and sustaining the progress already made in environmental cleanliness.

‎The market leader reaffirmed the commitment of traders and residents of Omagba Phase II to supporting government policies aimed at protecting the environment.

‎He also urged Ndi Anambra to continue embracing environmental sanitation as a shared responsibility for the overall development and well-being of the state.
