A determined Indian women’s hockey team won the Women’s Hockey Junior Asia Cup 2024 in Muscat, Oman, by defeating the People’s Republic of China in a thrilling penalty shootout on Sunday. The final ended in a 1-1 draw during regulation time, but India held their nerve in the shootout to claim a 3-2 victory and secure their second consecutive title in the tournament.

China took the lead just before halftime when Jinzhuang Tan scored through a penalty stroke in the 30th minute. However, India fought back in the third quarter, with Kanika Siwach scoring a field goal in the 41st minute after a well-coordinated move by Sunelita Toppo and Deepika. Despite chances for both teams in the final quarter, neither could break the deadlock, pushing the match into a penalty shootout.

In the tense shootout, Indian goalkeeper Nidhi played a crucial role by making three vital saves. Sakshi Rana, Ishika, and Sunelita Toppo converted their shots to seal India’s victory. The win not only reaffirmed India’s dominance in junior women’s hockey but also secured their qualification for the FIH Women’s Hockey Junior World Cup 2025 in Chile, along with the other top five teams in the tournament.

Deepika Sehrawat emerged as the top scorer of the competition with 12 goals, highlighting India’s strong attacking display throughout the tournament. India’s maiden Women’s Hockey Junior Asia Cup title came last year when they defeated the Republic of Korea in the final. With this back-to-back victory, the Under-21 Indian women’s team continues to show promise and potential on the global stage.
