Mali renames colonial French street names Mali followed Burkina Faso and Niger on Wednesday in renaming streets and squares in its capital to get rid of their French colonial names, AFP reported. Streets bearing the names of members of France's colonial administration have been rebaptised in Bamako, according to a decree by the junta chief. Cedeao Avenue (the French acronym for the Economic Community of West African States or ECOWAS) is also now named after a new strategic confederation that Mali has formed with Burkina Faso and Niger – the Alliance of Sahel States (AES). In all, nearly 25 names have been replaced, among them boulevards, streets, squares and public establishments. Niger and Burkina Faso have already made several changes to street and monument names in the last two years.  RCCG Donates Food, Clothing to 2,000 Vulnerable Abuja Residents

On Sunday, the Everlasting Arms Parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) in Garki, Abuja, distributed food items, clothing, and shoes to 2,000 vulnerable residents as part of their annual "Tabitha Tent" program. Established in 2007, this humanitarian initiative aims to provide essential support to the less fortunate during the holiday season.

Beneficiaries of the program expressed their gratitude, highlighting the impact of the donations on their lives. One recipient, Mr. Gonet Jato, thanked the church for providing food supplies, including rice and beans, which would help sustain his family during the Christmas period. He also urged the government to address the struggles of the poor in the country.

Ms. Happiness Jacob, another beneficiary, praised the church for the gifts she received, which included clothing and food items. She called on the government to assist the impoverished, especially during the holiday season, as many are suffering from hunger.

Ms. Victoria Ola also expressed her thanks, praying for God's blessings on those who made the donations possible. She urged the government to support similar initiatives to help even more people in need.

Pastor Everistus Azodo, the parish pastor, highlighted the lack of a functional social safety net in Nigeria, noting that many advanced countries have welfare systems to support the poor. He encouraged Nigerians to step in and help, as the government alone cannot address all the challenges.

The church’s efforts also include a skill acquisition program to equip vulnerable individuals with practical skills to improve their livelihoods. One of the program coordinators, Mrs. Modupe Ogundimu, acknowledged the contributions of all donors and supporters, emphasizing the importance of providing both material support and opportunities for self-sufficiency.
