 DR Congo president pardons coup plotters of American origin    President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) Felix Tshisekedi has granted a presidential pardon to several coup plotters of American origin, who had been sentenced to death, according to official sources, Xinhua reported. Marcel Malanga, born in Utah, United States, and two other Americans who were sentenced to death last September, "will not be executed, as the death penalty is commuted," said Tina Salama, spokesperson for the DRC presidency late Tuesday. Tshisekedi has ordered the commutation of Marcel Malanga's sentence to life imprisonment, said Salama, adding that the measure also applies to the other American nationals convicted. Thirty-seven alleged coup plotters were convicted and sentenced to death in September last year by a Kinshasa military court in a trial against the failed coup.  Jigawa Government Reveals N5bn Loss in August 2024 Protests


The Jigawa State Government has reported a total loss of N5 billion in property damages during the nationwide protests of August 2024.


Bello Fanini, Chairman of the fact-finding committee on the protests, disclosed the figures while presenting the committeeā€™s findings to Governor Umar Namadi at the Government House in Dutse.


Fanini detailed the breakdown of the losses, explaining that the Jigawa State Government incurred N2.8 billion in damages, while the Federal Government and its agencies lost N1.07 billion. Private individuals and businesses suffered losses of N707 million, local governments faced damages totaling N364 million, and the All Progressives Congress (APC) experienced losses of over N49 million.


The committee also made recommendations, including the need for the state government to compensate those who lost properties during the protests.


Governor Namadi thanked the committee for its efforts and assured that the government would carefully review the report and implement the suggested measures.


Recall that Governor Namadi had set up the fact-finding committee to investigate the causes of the August 1, 2024, protests in Jigawa State.
