 Over 25 million phones stolen in one year – FG The Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report of the National Bureau of Statistics, a Federal Government agency, shows that Nigeria recorded 25.35 million phone theft cases between May 2023 and April 2024. According to the report, this was the most common type of crime within the period under review. The report read, “The number of crimes experienced by individuals in Nigeria was analysed over a period of time. The results show that theft of phones (25,354,417) was the most common crime experienced by individuals, followed by consumer fraud (12,107,210) and assault (8,453,258). However, hijacking of cars (333,349) was the least crime experienced by individuals within the reference period.” It also noted that most phone theft cases occurred either at home or in a public place, and about 90 per cent of such cases were reported to the police. INEC Faces Challenges Ahead of Bayelsa State Elections


• Boat with 12 Election Personnel Capsizes in Southern Ijaw, SPO Abducted in Sagbama


In a recent press statement released today, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Bayelsa State Office, disclosed challenges faced during the transportation of personnel and electoral materials to Registration Area Centers (RACs) ahead of the upcoming elections.


On Friday, 10th November 2023, a boat en route to Registration Area-17 (Koluama) in Southern Ijaw LGA capsized. Fortunately, all 12 election personnel and the boat operator were rescued, and no lives were lost. However, the incident resulted in the loss of crucial election materials, including result sheets, power banks, and personal belongings of the staff.


The affected Registration Area-17 has 5,368 registered voters, with 5,311 PVCs collected. Despite the setback, INEC is actively working to ensure the smooth conduct of elections in the impacted area.


In another unfortunate event, the INEC State Presiding Officer (SPO) assigned to Registration Area-06 (Ossioma) in Sagbama LGA was reportedly abducted while waiting to board a boat at Amassoma Jetty. Security agencies have been notified, and efforts are underway to address the situation.


Wilfred O. Ifogah, Head of Voter Education & Publicity, speaking on behalf of the Bayelsa State INEC Office, emphasized their commitment to overcoming these challenges and ensuring the integrity of the electoral process in the state.
