 Sierra Leone drops treason charges against ex-president Ernest Koroma Sierra Leone has dropped treason charges against former president Ernest Bai Koroma, officials said, for his alleged role in what authorities called an attempted 2023 coup. Koroma, who led the West African nation from 2007 to 2018, was charged in January 2024 with treason and other offences. He travelled to Nigeria later that month after receiving permission from judicial authorities to spend a maximum of three months there for medical treatment, but he never returned to Sierra Leone. A statement from the Office of the attorney general and minister of justice Tuesday stated that it had "filed a notice to discontinue the criminal proceedings" against Koroma. ‘Free to return’ The ex-president "is therefore free to return to Sierra Leone upon the completion of his medical treatment or at any time of his choosing", the statement said, AFP reported. E. Messiri of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT,  High Court, Jabi, Abuja for fraud.  The defendant who is the former managing director of Buffah S. K. & Co Limited was arraigned on a five-count charge, bordering on advance fee fraud and obtaining under false pretence, to the tune of N108,068,500.00 (One Hundred and Eight Million, Sixty-Eight Thousand, Five Hundred Naira). The Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops (ZCCB) is meeting in Lusaka ahead of Zambia’s presidential, parliamentary and Local Government elections to be held on Thursday, August 13th 2026. The ZCCB earlier convened for a joint ecclesiastical assembly. Rather than a standalone plenary, this latest meeting was a collaborative gathering held alongside the Council of Churches in Zambia (CCZ) and the Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia (EFZ).  DR Congo begins trial of Gilead's experimental antiviral for Ebola Bundibugyo Researchers in the Democratic Republic of Congo said on Tuesday they have started enrolling participants in a trial testing Gilead Sciences' experimental antiviral obeldesivir as a post-exposure treatment for the ongoing Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak in DR Congo and Uganda. DR Congo's National Institute for Biomedical Research among other international agencies are leading the trial in Ituri province, the epicentre of the outbreak. The trial is designed to assess whether post-exposure treatment can reduce the risk of developing Ebola infection after contact with the virus, Reuters reported. The study aims to enroll about 1,000 people aged 12 years and older, who had high-risk exposure to a confirmed Ebola case within the previous five days but have not developed symptoms. Participants will be monitored daily for 21 days, with a final follow-up at 42 days.
