 China, Russia, Iran warships arrive in South Africa for military exercises Chinese, Russian and Iranian warships arrived in South African waters for a week of naval drills starting Friday off the coast of Cape Town. The Chinese-led drills were organized last year under the BRICS bloc of developing nations and South Africa's armed forces said they will bring members of the bloc together to practice maritime safety and anti-piracy operations and “deepen cooperation.” China, Russia and South Africa are longtime members of BRICS, while Iran joined the group in 2024. It was not immediately clear if other countries from the BRICS group — which also includes Brazil, India and the United Arab Emirates among others — would take part in the drills. A spokesperson for the South African armed forces said he wasn't yet able to confirm all the countries participating in the drills, which are due to run until next Friday.  Sporting sack Amorim successor Pereira


Sporting have appointed Rui Borges as head coach after sacking Joao Pereira, who lasted just over a month in charge at the Portuguese club following Ruben Amorim's departure. Pereira took over as boss of the Lisbon side soon after Amorim left to become Manchester United head coach in November, but he endured a difficult spell at the helm.


Sporting lost four of their eight games under Pereira, form which has resulted in them being knocked off the top of the Primeira Liga, with rivals Benfica leapfrogging them into first place. Borges has left Vitoria Guimaraes to become Sporting boss and has signed a contract until June 2026, with the deal including an option for a further one-year extension. "The time for me is right," said Borges, whose first game will be against Benfica on Sunday.


"It's always right. I'm very positive, I believe things happen when they have to. It's an opportunity we've all worked for." Amorim led Sporting to last season's league title and departed for a fresh challenge at Old Trafford after United sacked Erik ten Hag.


Borges now faces the challenge of chasing another championship and said: "I'm the leader of the Portuguese champions and I couldn't be happier. I look at the squad and it's the best. It's not even time to talk about signings."

 Tinubu announces arrival of 4 US attack helicopters President Bola Tinubu has stated that four attack helicopters will soon arrive in the country from the United States amid rising insecurity. Speaking at a meeting with a delegation of the Christian Association of Nigeria, led by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, at his Lagos residence, on Friday, Dec. 26, Tinubu revealed that the Federal Government had ordered four attack helicopters from the U.S, adding that they will arrive in the country “soon”.
