Ijaw Council Cautions Against Planned Protest Over NDDC Leadership

The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Central Zone, has issued a warning to the Coalition of Niger Delta Civil Society Organizations (CNDCSOs) and the Niger Delta Ex-agitators’ Forum over their planned protest concerning the leadership of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

IYC argued that the coalition’s claims are baseless and fail to acknowledge the progress made under the current NDDC administration. While recognizing the historical grievances and challenges faced by Niger Delta communities, the IYC emphasized that the allegations of financial misconduct, political favoritism, and mismanagement are unfounded and contradicted by the positive developments occurring within the NDDC.

Comrade Ginah Ikio, IYC Central Zone’s Information Officer, stated that the Ogbuku-led NDDC has prioritized equity and transparency, ensuring that all nine member states are fairly represented in terms of projects and employment opportunities.

The IYC reaffirmed its support for Chief Samuel Ogbuku’s leadership, highlighting his focus on infrastructure, education, and sustainable economic growth as pivotal for empowering local communities. The council urged the coalition to redirect its efforts toward collaboration instead of engaging in divisive actions.

“The IYC calls on all Niger Delta stakeholders to rally behind the NDDC, avoiding the exploitation of sentiments for political or personal gains. Constructive dialogue and cooperation will produce better outcomes than unfounded protests that may harm relations with the federal government,” the statement read.

The IYC also appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to dismiss the baseless accusations from the so-called CNDCSOs and to continue supporting the efforts of Chief Samuel Ogbuku and his leadership team. The group expressed confidence that with ongoing federal government support, the NDDC will successfully fulfill its mission and bring about meaningful transformation in the Niger Delta region.
