A Tennessee woman had to have her leg amputated after being attacked by her own dog. This terrifying incident occurred in the Murfreesboro, Tennessee home of 42-year-old Amanda Mears.  On the evening of December 10th, Amanda was preparing to take her dog, a Pit Bull/ American Staffordshire mix, named "Dennis" out for a walk.  As the two were making their way to the door, Amanda's other dog Ralphie, an American Bully, escaped from the room she was keeping him in.  In the blink of an eye, a vicious dog fight erupted. Amanda, who fosters dogs that have been abandoned, is no stranger to dog fights and jumped between the battling dogs in an attempt to stop the fight.  However, this turned out to not be your typical situation. For some reason, Dennis turned his ire towards Amanda. In the following attack, Amanda would end up with a bite to her left hand and a bone crushed in her left arm.  Anambra Govt Offers Free Ambulance Services, Responds Quickly to Accident Emergency Calls, Says Health Commissioner

By Ifeyinwa Ogwo

The Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, announced that the state government provides free ambulance services to accident victims and responds promptly to emergency calls using the designated numbers: 5111 and 112. He highlighted the launch of a program called the Anambra State Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System (ASEMSAS), which operates 24 hours a day to address all emergencies.

Dr. Obidike said this during a courtesy visit from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Anambra State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Joyce N. Alexander, and her team at his office in the Jerome Udoji Secretariat in Awka.

The Commissioner emphasized the importance of safety and expressed his desire to collaborate with the FRSC on emergency medical services and ambulance systems to provide immediate medical attention for accident victims and save lives.

He urged the public to always call the emergency numbers to report road crashes for swift assistance. "This service has been tested and proven efficient and effective. Within 10 to 20 minutes of placing a call, an ambulance will arrive at the scene to rescue the victims and transport them to the nearest hospital," he said.

Responding, the Anambra FRSC Sector Commander, Joyce N. Alexander thanked the commissioner for the warm welcome. She explained that their visit aimed to foster collaboration with the Ministry on the treatment of accident victims, the release of data, and public awareness regarding the emergency numbers to call during road crashes for immediate rescue operations.

She noted, "The FRSC has a toll-free emergency number, 122, which is located in Abuja. When you call this number regarding a road crash in any part of Nigeria, they will immediately alert the FRSC Command in the relevant jurisdiction, ensuring prompt assistance. Additionally, we have a Short Message Service (SMS) number, 080-call-FRSC, which consists of twelve digits."

Commander Alexander emphasized the connection between road safety and health. "Whenever you think of the FRSC, you think of health because crashes are a health issue. Road safety is categorized as a health matter by the United Nations. We collaborate closely with health facilities and the Ministry of Health to ensure effective coordination."

She stressed the importance of road users exercising caution and adhering to safety measures, irrespective of road conditions. "The decision to drive carefully on good or bad roads, and to use safe vehicles, lies with the individual. Safety is primarily the responsibility of road users, regardless of governmental efforts."

She, then, advocated for increased public awareness, particularly among grassroots communities about the emergency numbers to call for swift rescue operations during road crashes.
