Somali World Cup Referee Denied Entry to United States Award-winning Somali referee, Omar Artan, has been denied entry into the United States despite holding a valid visa, according to a senior official in Somalia’s sports ministry. Artan, who is set to become the first Somali referee to officiate at the FIFA World Cup finals, was stopped at Miami International Airport and subsequently returned to Istanbul, where he had been residing. The reason for the denial was not immediately disclosed. However, Somalia is among the countries affected by a travel ban introduced by the administration of Donald Trump. Reacting to the development, Ciise Aden Abshir, a senior adviser to Somalia’s Ministry of Youth and Sports and a former national team captain, described Artan as one of Africa’s most respected referees. “Omar Artan is among Africa’s most respected referees and deserves the support of the entire football community,” Abshir told AFP on Monday.  Abia Governor Alex Otti Clarifies Visit to Detained IPOB Leader Nnamdi Kanu, Denies Political Ambitions

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has explained that his recent visit to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, was motivated solely by the pursuit of dialogue and peace, and not by any personal political ambitions.

The governor made the clarification on Friday during a courtesy visit by the leadership of the Abia Diaspora Commission and the medical team of the state's Global Medical Mission 2025 at the Government House in Umuahia.

Otti's remarks come amid criticism sparked by a viral video on social media, in which an individual questioned the motives behind his trip to meet Kanu, who is currently serving a life sentence at the Sokoto Correctional Centre following his conviction on terrorism-related charges.

Defending the visit, Governor Otti emphasized that it was aimed at fostering dialogue to promote lasting peace in the region. He described differing opinions as a healthy part of democracy, noting that disagreement does not inherently make one viewpoint correct.

The governor also addressed speculation about his future political plans, reiterating a previous statement he made in October during a meeting with representatives of President Bola Tinubu.

"One of the issues raised in the video was my ambition after serving as governor," Otti said. "I have said this before... and I will say it again today: By the time I complete my tenure as governor, I will retire from public office."

He stressed that he has no intentions of contesting any further elections, including presidential, vice-presidential, or senatorial positions, adding that he plans to step aside to allow younger leaders to emerge.
