Iran fan rushes field after late goal drama as offside call denies World Cup knockout breakthrough in chaotic finish vs Egypt
An Iranian fan ran onto the field in celebration and had to be restrained by seven security guards after a dramatic late sequence in Iran’s World Cup match against Egypt.
The chaos followed a 93rd-minute strike from Shoja Khalilzadeh, who ripped off his jersey and was mobbed by teammates after appearing to score a late winner that would have sent Iran into the knockout round for the first time in the expanded 48-team tournament.
For a brief moment, Iran believed it had completed a comeback and secured progression. However, the goal was overturned for offside following a video review, wiping out the decisive strike and changing the outcome of the group.
With the goal disallowed, the match ended in a 1-1 draw, sending Egypt through the group stage while Iran was left waiting to learn its fate depending on other results. Egypt will now face Australia in the round of 32.
Egypt had taken an early lead through Mahmoud Saber in the fifth minute, with former Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah involved in the build-up. Iran equalized in the 14th minute through Ramin Rezaeian after earlier missing a penalty when Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir made a save in the 11th minute.
Iran coach Amir Ghalenoei expressed frustration after the match, pointing to multiple disallowed goals during the tournament. “Technology is justice,” he said, “but I’m upset about our bad luck.”
Midfielder Rouzbeh Cheshmi said the team remained proud despite uncertainty over advancement, noting they had “held up” across their recent matches but no longer controlled their own destiny.
Egypt coach Hossam Hassan said he was relieved the offside call stood, noting his team had already secured qualification. “After this goal was ruled offside, I was very happy,” he said.
Off the field, Iran’s squad also faced logistical challenges during the tournament, including travel restrictions and limited movement between accommodations and training sites. Players and staff said the conditions affected recovery and preparation, though the team acknowledged easing restrictions ahead of the Seattle match.
Following Friday’s result, Iran’s coach criticized what he described as difficult treatment during the tournament, saying the team had been heavily restricted in its movement and support access.
Despite the disappointment, Iran remained mathematically alive in the competition for at least another day, with players describing pride in their performances even as their qualification hopes hung in the balance on other results.
