NEMA COORDINATES SAR OPS AT THE SCENE OF BUILDING COLLAPSE INVOLVING A THREE STOREY BUILDING UNDER CONSTRUCTION AT GUDU AREA OF FCT At about 0945hrs on Saturday 16th May, 2026, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) was alerted of a building collapse at Gudu District of FCT. Critical stakeholders including Federal Fire, FCT Fire, NSCDC, NPF, FRSC and Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) were activated while a response team of NEMA from the Abuja Operations Office led by the Head of Operations Mr Zakari Abubakar and operatives from AYA Emergency Response Bay (ERAB) were deployed to the scene for quick response and coordination. A reinforcement team from NEMA Headquarters led by the Director Search and Response (DSAR) Air Cdre Bature Usman was also on ground to provide necessary backup and supervision. Christ Chosen Church today collapsed living one person dead and two trapped.The church is located at Usama street,Uzebu quarters in Benin,Edo state.The dead person was pulled out of the rubble after about three hours after a rescue operation by sympathizers.Three of the nine workers allegedly hired by the church at N3,000 per day to demolish the building which served as offices and living quarters to officials of the church,were said to have just stepped out of the building to eat when it suddenly collapsed on those still working.Angry residents set a bus belonging to the church ablaze and destroyed the church main auditorium.They blamed the church for resorting to manual labour to demolish the building when they could have hired an excavator.More photos below.
