 TEAM LAGOS EMERGES TOP AT 23RD NATIONAL SPORTS FESTIVAL SOUTH WEST ELIMINATION Lagos State athletes proved their dominance in the South West by edging out regional competitors and emerging top in the five team events contested at the elimination series qualifier for the 23rd National Sports Festival later this year in Enugu. The elimination series featured team events in volleyball, basketball, football, beach volleyball, and cricket in male and female categories. While the team clinched only the female football ticket by topping their group, they showed dominance in three other sports by winning both the male and female tickets. Team Lagos took first position in the volleyball male and female categories. The male team defeated their counterparts from Ondo in the finals by 25-18, 24-26, 25-20, and 25-20, while the female team defeated Team Oyo by 25-18, 22-25, 28-26, 16-25, and 15-8.  ZIMBABWEAN COUPLE DEPORTED OVER SECRET BURIAL OF CHILD IN BOTSWANA


A Zimbabwean couple has been deported from Botswana after secretly burying their child without notifying authorities.


Motilinah Mpofu and Christopher Ncube were convicted on Thursday of concealing a death after they allegedly dug a grave for their child in the dead of night.


The Gaborone court heard the child had died suddenly. Instead of reporting the death to police, health officials, or traditional leaders, the couple quietly buried the youngster and hoped no one would find out.


But the secret did not stay buried for long.  

Police moved in and arrested the pair.


In sentencing, the court ordered that the couple be taken to the Plumtree Border Post for deportation to Zimbabwe. 


Top Botswana lawyer Winnie Masitha who offered the couple free legal representation during the trial, confirmed the deportation to BTV News.


Masitha believed that the matter should not be viewed only through the lens of criminal liability. She argued that the circumstances surrounding the couple point to broader social and institutional failures that may have contributed to their actions.


Her decision to represent the pair at no cost drew public attention in Botswana, with the case igniting debate over whether vulnerable foreign nationals facing hardship receive adequate support during times of crisis.
