Thieves cut hole in Florida mall roof to steal $50,000 worth of sneakers

Authorities in Florida say a group of masked thieves pulled off a bold, movie-style heist by cutting a hole through the concrete roof of the Treasure Coast Mall in Jensen Beach and stealing hundreds of sneakers. The break-in occurred at a Champs Sporting Goods store sometime between midnight and 8 a.m. Tuesday, with investigators estimating that between 400 and 500 pairs of Nike and New Balance shoes were taken. According to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, the stolen merchandise—worth an estimated $40,000 to $50,000—was bagged, tagged, and dropped from the roof into a waiting vehicle before the robbers fled the scene. The damage to the building’s roof is expected to cost about $10,000 to repair.

Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek described the elaborate burglary as something out of “Mission Impossible,” noting that the suspects appeared to be part of an organized, possibly traveling criminal group. He said the thieves likely used electric grinders or saws to cut through the concrete roof and spent hours inside the mall without being detected. Deputies recovered some items left behind in the thieves’ haste to escape. Investigators continue to search for the suspects, and anyone with information is asked to contact the Martin County Sheriff’s Office at 772-220-7060.
