“Not all Kutis use narcotics” — Afrobeat singer Made Kuti addresses family misconception Afrobeat singer, Made Kuti, has dismissed the misconception that all members of the Kuti family use narcotics.  Speaking with TheCable on the sidelines of the United States mission’s 250th Independence Day celebration in Lagos, the singer said many people wrongly assume he and his relatives use drugs. “A lot of people think I smoke, but I don’t, and even my dad has quit. So, there is a big misconception that the family are all into narcotics, but most of us are not,” he said. When asked to describe himself in three words, Made chose “hardworking, loyal and passionate,” adding with a joke that “loyal” fits because “I’m a married man”. When asked which Nigerian artiste he currently listens to, Made named his grandfather.

The quality of people taking up public offices in Nigeria have been very disappointing— prof. Pat. Utomi

Renowned political economist and founder of the Centre for Values in Leadership (CVL), Prof. Pat Utomi, has expressed deep concern over the quality of leadership in Nigeria, saying the country has suffered painful disappointments from many individuals entrusted with public office.

In an interview with Arise TV at his 70th birthday media chat, Utomi lamented that self-interest has increasingly overtaken genuine concern for the people, noting that this trend has undermined the true purpose of public service.

According to him, public office should be anchored on sacrifice and a commitment to the collective good, not personal enrichment or ego.

“The ultimate reason for public life should be giving yourself for the common good of all,” Utomi said, stressing that leadership separated from values inevitably fails society.

The CVL founder emphasized the need for values-driven leadership, accountability, and a renewed moral compass in governance, arguing that Nigeria’s development challenges are as ethical as they are structural.
