 Chiziterem Recovers Fully as Anambra Govt Reaffirms Child Protection Commitment ‎ ‎ ‎By Ginika Oguji ‎ ‎ ‎The Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, on July 18 supervised the discharge of young  Chiziterem who was allegedly abused in Awada Obosi, after weeks of treatment at the Comprehensive Medical Center Awkuzu. ‎ ‎Chiziterem received free medical care, surgery, psychological and physiotherapy support under the supervision of the Ministry of Health in partnership with the  Office of the First Lady, Mrs Nonye Soludo. ‎ ‎Speaking during the discharge, Dr Obidike said the boy had made full recovery and now stable to unite with his family. “Medically, he has done very well. The resident, Peter Precious, said he and his partner were searching for a two-bedroom apartment near Angwan Boro New Market in Kaduna, where their production facility is located. According to him, the agent informed them that the physical inspection fee for the apartment was ₦5,000, which he said he considered acceptable. However, when he requested a video of the property because they were unable to leave work immediately, the agent allegedly insisted on a ₦3,000 payment before sending the footage.  BAUCHI STATE POLICE COMMAND PRESS RELEASE ONE ARRESTED FOR CULPABLE HOMICIDE AND UNLAWFUL POSSESSION OF FIREARM IN UNGUWAR  ANGAS, BAUCHI The Editors,  The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested one suspect in connection with a case of culpable homicide and unlawful possession of a locally made firearm that occurred in Bauchi metropolis.   Accordingly, the report was received at 'A' Division Township, Bauchi, on 19th July 2026 at about 2030hrs, from a  47-year-old man of Unguwar Ngas, Bauchi LGA.   The complainant stated that on the same date at about 1900hrs, while at Unguwar Ngas, Inkil, Bauchi, one Clement Anthony, male, 40-years-old, of the same address, armed himself with a locally made single-barrel gun and intentionally fired it at Mr. Jacob Bature, male, 55-years-old Mai Anguwan Ngas, also of the same address. Construction workers claim they uncovered pin-covered figurine buried at building site. Construction workers have gone viral after sharing a video of what they claimed was a strange object discovered while excavating a construction site. According to the men, they uncovered what appeared to be a wooden figurine wrapped and covered with pins, which they believed had been buried deliberately for spiritual purposes. In the video, the workers removed the pins one after another, saying they believed whoever the figurine was meant to represent had been "set free." They also rained curses on whoever allegedly buried it. Watch video below.

 Chevron shuts down Gulf operations as Tropical Depression Two threatens flooding and storm impacts Tropical Depression Two is continuing to strengthen over the eastern Gulf of America, raising concerns about heavy rain, flooding and dangerous storm conditions along parts of the U.S. coastline. Chevron announced it is shutting down production at its Petronius offshore facility and moving personnel back to shore as a precaution ahead of the storm’s expected intensification. The company is taking the steps as Tropical Depression Two could strengthen into Tropical Storm Bertha. Offshore energy operations are particularly vulnerable during tropical systems because many facilities are located in coastal waters where strong winds, high waves and flooding can create hazardous conditions. Prime Minister Andy Burnham announces VAT cut on electricity bills from October to reduce household energy costs Prime Minister Andy Burnham has announced plans to remove VAT from household electricity bills from October as part of the government's first measures aimed at reducing living costs. The policy will reduce VAT on electricity bills from 5% to 0%, with the government estimating the change could lower annual household energy costs by about £45 based on the current price cap. The announcement comes as energy prices are expected to remain under pressure later this year following tensions in the Middle East. According to the government, the VAT reduction will be introduced alongside the £150 energy bill reduction announced in the previous Budget. The Treasury estimates the new policy will cost £850 million during the 2026/27 financial year.  DSS CHALLENGES LIFE SENTENCE FOR ANSARU COMMANDERS The Department of State Services is set to appeal the life sentences handed down to the two convicted Ansaru terrorist commanders by the Abuja high court, insisting the punishment does not reflect the gravity of their crimes. The Federal High Court in Abuja sentenced Mahmud Usman, alias Abu Bara'a, the self-proclaimed Emir of Ansaru, and Abubakar Abba, alias Mahmud al-Nigeri, to life imprisonment after both men pleaded guilty to 32 terrorism-related charges. However, a senior DSS official says the Service will seek the maximum penalty, arguing that the convicts were central to the kidnapping of pupils and teachers in Oriire, Oyo State, where abductors allegedly demanded their release in exchange for the victims. The DSS also maintains that two teachers were beheaded during the ordeal to pressure the government, insisting justice for the victims and their families requires a stiffer punishment than life imprisonment.

 South Africa gets $1.5 billion World Bank loan for infrastructure South Africa has secured a $1.5 billion World Bank loan to support ​reforms aimed at easing infrastructure bottlenecks, ‌boosting economic growth and creating jobs, its National Treasury said on Tuesday. The Development Policy ​Loan will be spent on the ​water and sanitation, freight transport and ⁠electricity sectors, the Treasury said in ​a statement. The loan offers a favourable interest ​rate and flexible repayment terms, contributing to minimising the rise in debt service costs, the Treasury ​added, Reuters reported. It said the loan has a ​15-year maturity, including a three-year grace period, and ‌carries ⁠an interest rate of six-month SOFR (Secured Overnight Financing Rate) plus 1.35%. Together with financing from other multilateral lenders, the loan has ​enabled the ​South ⁠African government to meet its 2026/27 foreign currency borrowing requirement ​of $3.2 billion. Immigration CG Not Under Investigation The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, is aware of reports in the media about alleged visa racketeering involving some officers of the Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS, especially subtle insinuations about assumed investigation of the Comptroller General of the Immigration Service, Kemi Nandap.  The Commission wishes to state unequivocally that it has no case with the Immigration CG.   There are subsisting cases of alleged visa fraud against some immigration officers at the Federal High Court. Further investigations are ongoing with the possibility that more NIS officers could be arraigned for alleged fraudulent practices in the near future. However, the Immigration CG is not remotely connected to these investigations. The media is enjoined to always seek clarifications on the activities of the EFCC to avoid misrepresentation of facts.

 Senior Ghanaian politician jailed for 20 years over illegal mining The High Court in Accra found Bernard Antwi-Boasiako – the leader in the Ashanti Region of opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) – guilty on all six charges against him. They include the unlawful assignment of mineral rights and the intentional facilitation of unlicenced mining operations in gold-mining areas. "The allegation was never contested. The accused admitted that no ministerial approval was received," judge Audrey Kocuvie-Tay said. The 20-year sentence falls within the statutory punishment range of between 15 and 25 years provided for under the West African country's laws.
