On the evening of July 17th Audrey Suarez decided to walk to a relative's home. As the 24-week pregnant expecting mother was walking along the street, an altercation erupted between some unnamed neighbors. Although the sudden hostilities had nothing to do with Audrey, she would ultimately suffer lasting consequences as a result.
A child of one of the individuals involved in the ongoing incident inadvertently let two dogs out of an enclosed yard.
The dogs immediately locked in on Audrey and charged. Before she knew what was happening, Audrey was being attacked by a pair of aggressive and angry dogs.
Audrey's thoughts instinctively went to her unborn twins and how this sudden attack may affect them. Her maternal mode kicked in, and Audrey concentrated all of her energy and attention to covering her stomach as she endured the vicious attack everywhere else.
Thankfully, a bystander who witnessed the attack was quick to intervene and rescue Audrey.
However, by this time, she had already suffered substantial damage from the dogs.
Audrey would undergo a 10-hour surgery on her face and an additional 4-hour surgery on her eye. One of the dog bites had caused her iris to be lacerated. Audrey also suffered a broken pinky during the attack.
Now that she is back home recovering from the attack and subsequent surgeries, Audrey is plagued by nightmares and wakes up screaming for someone to get the dogs off of her. Audrey has essentially been left traumatized as she heals and awaits the arrival of her twins.
An officer with the Topeka Police Department was forced to shoot one of the dogs on the night of the attack. The second dog remains in quarantine. Police say that the owner of the dogs has fully cooperated during the investigation.
Our thoughts are with Audrey as she heals and prepares for her upcoming journey as a mother to twins.
