 DELTA STATE POLICE COMMAND PRESS RELEASE POLICE ARREST TWO SUSPECTED CRIMINALS, RECOVER TWO BERETTA PISTOLS, NINE ROUNDS OF LIVE AMMUNITION, SUSPECTED COCAINE, AND MERCEDES-BENZ SUV The Delta State Police Command has recorded another significant operational success with the arrest of two suspected criminals and the recovery of firearms, live ammunition, suspected cocaine, and other incriminating exhibits during a stop-and-search operation carried out by operatives of the Safer Highway Patrol along the Agbarho–Warri Road on 25 July 2026. The suspects, Omini Ezeri (46) and Chinedum Wagbara (42), both residents of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, were intercepted while travelling in a grey Mercedes-Benz ML SUV with registration number AAA 604 JZ. During preliminary interrogation, a third occupant of the vehicle, God Knows Ifreke, suddenly took to his heels and escaped into a nearby swamp.  IGP DENIES DISU ISSUED SHOOT-ON-SIGHT ORDER FOR ILLEGAL FIREARMS HOLDERS 


A viral claim alleging that the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, ordered officers to shoot anyone found with illegal firearms has been dismissed by the Nigeria Police Force as false, misleading and a gross distortion of the IGP's remarks.


A statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, says the Inspector-General never issued any "shoot-on-sight" directive during the stakeholders' meeting in Makurdi, Benue State. 


The Force explains that the IGP's comments were taken out of context.


IGP Disu merely reminded officers that only duly authorised security personnel are legally permitted to bear arms, while stressing that the proliferation of illegal firearms continues to fuel kidnapping, armed robbery, banditry, cultism and other violent crimes across the country.


The Police also reaffirmed that the use of firearms by officers is strictly guided by Force Order 237, which clearly defines the circumstances under which lethal force may be lawfully applied. 


It emphasised that the IGP never directed officers to shoot anyone solely for possessing an illegal firearm.

Reaffirming its commitment to professionalism, the rule of law and respect for human rights.


The Nigeria Police Force assured Nigerians that all policing operations will continue to be carried out within the provisions of the Constitution and established legal frameworks.


The Force also urged journalists and members of the public to verify security-related information before publication or circulation, warning that misinformation can create unnecessary panic, mislead citizens and undermine public confidence in security institutions.
