 VIGILANTE RE-ARRESTS SUSPECTED VANDAL ALONG BENIN–ONITSHA TRANSMISSION LINE The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has commended the Omelu Community Vigilante for its vigilance and swift response, which led to the arrest of a suspected vandal allegedly attempting to vandalise a transmission tower along the Benin–Onitsha 330kV Transmission Line. The incident occurred during a routine patrol by members of the Omelu Community Vigilante, who noticed a suspicious individual beneath one of TCN’s transmission towers allegedly attempting to loosen the tower base bracing  when he was apprehended. The suspect has been handed over to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for further investigation. The suspect had been apprehended by members of the same community about two months ago for a similar alleged offence.  On that occasion, he was released after pleading for leniency following medical treatment, only to be apprehended again for an alleged repeat offence.

 NACA Intensifies Effort To Protect People Living With HIV/AIDS


The National Agency for the Control of AIDS, NACA, in collaboration with Global Fund, is to launch a comprehensive three-month sensitization programme on tackling the prevailing gender and human right challenges that significantly affect individuals living with or affected by HIV.


 A statement by the Head, Public Relations and Protocol, Mrs Toyin Aderigbigbe, says the programme, slated for October to December 2023, underscores the Agency’s unwavering commitment to championing and safeguarding the rights and well-being of all people living with HIV, while striving to create a more inclusive and equitable society.


According to the Director General of NACA, Dr. Gambo Aliyu,“People living with, vulnerable to or affected by HIV are entitled to enjoyment of all human rights and exercising equal participation in civil, political, social, economic and cultural life, without prejudice, stigma or discrimination of any kind.”


 “Unfortunately, these people are either unaware of their rights and responsibilities or lack the capability to seek redress when necessary, thus, the need for the sensitization and popularization of the availability and pertinence of the provisions of access to justice as it pertains to human rights, gender based violence and the national HIV & AIDS response.”


 The statement explains that the three-month sensitization programme aims to reinforce public awareness of the fundamental principles and significance of the National HIV and AIDS Anti-discrimination Act of 2014, heighten public consciousness regarding the intersection of gender and human rights issues with HIV/AIDS and their profound implications for individuals and communities.


 According to the statement, the programme also aims to enhance the general population’s knowledge of a step-by-step guide for taking action in cases where the rights of individuals living with and affected by HIV and AIDS are violated, including information about grievance reporting and available redress mechanisms in the country and also promote multi-sectoral strategies and collaborations by defining the varied roles and levels of responsibilities of different stakeholders.
