Nigeria Stands Firm on Nuclear Test Ban, Says VP Shettima

Vice President Kashim Shettima has reiterated Nigeria’s resolute commitment to opposing nuclear weapons testing, emphasizing that the country has no interest in pursuing nuclear capabilities. Speaking during a meeting at the Presidential Villa with a delegation from the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organisation (CTBTO), led by Executive Secretary Dr. Robert Floyd, Shettima underscored Nigeria’s focus on addressing pressing socio-economic and environmental challenges.

Shettima highlighted the myriad issues facing Nigeria and other African nations, including widespread poverty and the impacts of climate change. “We are fighting poverty; we are fighting a war against the relationship between the economy and ecology in sub-Saharan Africa. We have no business dabbling in anything that has to do with nuclear weapons,” he stated, adding that nuclear conflict would yield no winners, only devastation.

The Vice President praised the CTBTO for its contributions beyond nuclear test monitoring, noting its role in detecting tsunamis and seismic volcanic activity, which supports global ecological stability. He reaffirmed Nigeria’s alignment with the organization’s mission to promote a nuclear-free world.

The meeting reflects Nigeria’s ongoing collaboration with international bodies to prioritize peace, security, and sustainable development over militarization. The CTBTO delegation commended Nigeria’s leadership in advocating for the global nuclear test ban and expressed hope for continued partnership.
