Imo State Governor Increases Minimum Wage for Doctors and lecturers

Governor Uzodimma made the announcement on Tuesday night during a meeting with labour union leaders at the Government House, Owerri.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), The governor has approved upward reviews in health and educational sectors. The minimum wage for doctors was raised from ₦215,000 to ₦503,000, while that of lecturers in tertiary institutions was increased from ₦119,000 to ₦222,000.

Governor Uzodimma said the decision was driven by improved revenue, noting that the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) has grown from ₦400 million to over ₦3 billion monthly. He added that the state’s debt profile had dropped from ₦280 billion in 2020 to less than ₦100 billion.

He described the wage review as an investment in Imo workers, stressing that better pay boosts productivity, strengthens families, and grows the economy.

Labour leaders, including the NLC and TUC chairmen, hailed the move as a major victory for workers and praised the governor’s commitment to welfare reforms.
