Solo hiker rescued after falling on icy West Virginia mountain terrain

First responders in West Virginia conducted an extensive rescue on Friday after a female hiker slipped on icy terrain and became stranded on Shenandoah Mountain. Emergency crews and fire teams were called to the scene after the hiker fell and slid down a steep trail.

Rescue efforts began around 6 p.m., with teams navigating the slick conditions using several hundred feet of rope and two UTVs to reach the hiker. The operation lasted approximately 5.5 hours before the hiker was safely escorted down the mountain and transported by ambulance to Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Officials noted this was the second rescue in the area in the past two weeks and warned hikers to avoid the trails without proper winter gear, such as ice cleats or crampons.
