Commercial flights at Akure Airport have been halted after a heavy rainstorm caused extensive damage to property and equipment worth millions of naira.
The control tower was the hardest hit, with critical aviation equipment severely affected.
Sources at the airport revealed that the incident disrupted passengers, airport staff, and other users of the facility.
Beyond the airport, the storm also caused destruction in nearby communities, including Eleyewo, Ilu Abo, and Bolorunduro, damaging schools, homes, churches, vehicles, and electricity poles.
According to an insider, the storm destroyed essential equipment in the control tower, such as the network time protocol system, encoder, air conditioners, and computers.
"Monday's thunderstorm inflicted major damage on the control tower, shattering windows and collapsing parts of the ceiling. Additionally, about seven staff buildings had their roofs torn off," the source disclosed.
Due to the damage, all commercial flight operations have been suspended indefinitely pending repairs to the affected equipment.
