ORTOM PARDONS EIGHT CONVICTS ON DEATH ROW TO MARK END OF TENURE

29th May, 2023

Samuel Ortom, governor of Benue, says eight convicted prisoners on death row have had their sentences commuted to life imprisonment.

Ortom spoke on Sunday during a valedictory thanksgiving service to mark the end of his eight years in office at Redeemed Christian Church of God, Signs and Wonders Parish, in Makurdi, Benue capital.

The governor also pardoned 13 other prisoners sentenced to life imprisonment, saying he has finished his tenure stronger as a Christian.

He thanked all outgoing members of his cabinet, noting that he couldn’t have achieved success without the judiciary and the legislative arm.

He said all three arms of government worked together with profound understanding, adding that his administration has passed more laws in the history of the state.

He expressed appreciation to traditional rulers for their support and contributions to the success of the administration.

“To mark the celebration of this valedictory thanksgiving to God for the successful completion of my tenure as governor, I have approved the report of the prerogative of mercy to convert the death sentence of eight convicts to life imprisonment,” he said.

“I have also approved the release of 11 convicts sentenced to life imprisonment and paid the fine of two inmates who will be granted freedom.”

Also speaking, Benson Abounu, deputy governor of the state, said the administration has accomplished milestones in most sectors, adding that they would be “leaving the state stronger”.

Abounu added that the open grazing prohibition and ranches establishment law by the administration was a legacy achievement recognized all over the country.
